WFTDA, USARS Announce Insurance Reciprocity

From: Derby News Network

by Hurt Reynolds - June 25, 2009 - 3:58pm

In a press release dated today, the two major providers of liability insurance for modern roller derby skaters and organizations have reached an agreement ensuring reciprocal coverage.

USA Roller Sports, the governing body for most roller sports in the United States, and the Women's Flat Track Derby Association, each provide supplemental medical coverage for individual participants, as well as general liability coverage for events sanctioned by that body, so long as all participants carry the individual coverage provided by the event sanctioning organization.

With two major providers, this often required individuals to purchase day-pass coverage when attending events sanctioned by the one, if their individual coverage was through the other.

Today's announcement means day passes will no longer be necessary for individuals with either provider's individual coverage when attending events sanctioned by the other. This agreement will reduce costs and complication for both individual skaters and event hosts, and comes just in time for this weekend's East Coast Derby Extravaganza.
From WFTDA's press release:
Two major roller sports organizations have entered into an historic agreement regarding insurance reciprocity for each other's events. Starting today, the insurance policies managed by the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) and USA Roller Sports (USARS), which both provide coverage for roller derby leagues in the United States, are reciprocal.

As a result of this new agreement, USARS members can now be covered by their USARS insurance at WFTDA-insured events, and WFTDA policy holders can be covered by their WFTDA insurance at USARS-sanctioned events. Ending the need for single-event passes effectively eliminates a significant cost for roller derby leagues.

Now, with the completion of some basic enrollment paperwork, both groups of insureds can be covered at the East Coast Derby Extravaganza in Philadelphia, PA, June 27-29, and RollerCon 2009, in Las Vegas, NV, July 29-August 2. Event organizers will provide participants with details about accessing the new reciprocity benefit.

European Union Launches “Electrical Derby” – Bodacious Girls, Roller Skates and Electricity!

1The European Union officially launches Electrical Derby on YouTube today, their follow-up to last year’s viral sensation, Chemical Party

The EU continues to find clever and original ways to make science research not only easy to understand, but also hip and funny. Their latest roller derby-inspired advert manages to push the comedy even more, as neon-clad roller girls (electrons!) whiz around a roller rink (electric current!). Mustached men act as the positive and negative sides of the battery, while

S.W.A.T. team "resisters" try to slow down the rolling electrons.

Watch, as the action of a short circuit and a switch of polarity gets played out with remarkable comedic accuracy – making the prospect of research careers, really, well, cool!
