Derby name:
Madame Ovary

Real Name:
Andrea Ferroni

Number:
10

How did you come up with your name and number?

I was going for a reproductive system theme since I am a midwife. Turns out, it is nice to have gilrs shouting, "Madame!" at me all the time. And number ten is for 10 centimeters dilated. You ladies in the know recall how victorious you feel when you reach that number.

What made you first start roller derby, or how did you discover roller derby?

I saw my first bout in Madison, WI a few years ago and was IN LOVE. I went out afterward with the coach and asked her a million questions. I resigned myself to the sad fact that I'd either have to move to Sacramento, or give up the dream of being able to play. And then one day Mermad was at my house picking up her kids and said she had to hurry off to roller derby practice and I screamed, "There's roller derby here!?!"

Why do you love roller derby so much?

Oh!

How many hours per week do you practice?

7, and if I miss a practice, I'm sluggish at the next one.

What is your favorite drill?

I like them all except that one called "the bear" where we walk on out
wrists with our butts in the air. I have yet to see the point of that. I loved the freeze tag, love plowing while holding the "reins" of another girl, love the zombies...

What is the most challenging part of roller derby?

Getting to practice. It is like a part time job. And for me specifically, not knowing if I'm going to be called away for a birth. In the beginning it was hard to hit the other girls as hard as I could, but I got over that really quickly.

What are your non-derby hobbies?

Cooking, reading, cocktails, knitting, homesteading, traveling, eating.

What’s your favorite piece of your roller derby wardrobe?

Socks. Roller derby has sanctioned my sock fetish.

How does your derby alter ego differ from your everyday persona?

I'm the same.

What is a common misconception about roller derby?

That you have to be a "type".

What’s your favorite roller derby web site?

I spend very little time online on derby. Most of my online derby activity is watching bouts.

What advice would you give someone who is thinking about joining roller derby?

Roll it out!
